2011 Roundtable Forums
In July there were 3 Roundtable forums held around San Diego. Below are recaps from those forums.
UTC Forum held at Amylin Pharmaceuticals
Doug was looking for help with renegotiating his lease, in particular help persuading the landlord to contribute to their environmental upgrades, such as a reclaim meter ($35K), lighting, solar panels. John recommended Jim Tripoli (eebi@semprautilities ) with SDGE for some help, and Project Manager Advisors www.pmainc.com. Shira suggested they ask the landlord to share their long-term goals for the property.
Chuck brought up cooling data systems. 15 year old building, needing independent help evaluating new technologies. Commander Schulman (sorry sir, just can’t call you Andrew) shared his technology focused on cooling the equipment, not the whole room. John is in the middle of the same issue, and suggested he and Chuck share notes. He was going to get him the name of his independent consultant. Kara explained how Amylin had moved data processing hardware to Arizona- with significant savings. Recommendations for IFMA Member consultants would be appreciated.
Jonathan was losing sleep over leaky roofs- Commander Schulman and others agreed that EPDM www.epdmroofs.org was the way to go, using manufacture certified installation companies. Recommendations for IFMA Roofing Service Companies would be appreciated.
Chuck asked about basic space panning, and asset management software- concensus recommendations: AutoCAD- (light) http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/item?siteID=123112&id=15262530
perhaps members can comment on other possible applications. (Arch view?) Tracy likes VISIO http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/visio/. Click here for AutoCAD training classes available locally.
Kara brought up the question of size and allocation of available office space, and how others prioritize. No real surprises- several slightly different versions of title and tenure mostly. Here’s an IFMA article that might get your search for more information a jump start. http://www.ifma.org/tools/prdetail.cfm?id=444. I’m sure there is more IFMA data available if you’re interested.
Commander Schulman suggested getting rid of walls, in favor of low partitions or no partitions- enhancing teamwork. Also “Hotelling” or “Hot Office-ing” space for mobile users . Lots of conference rooms for private side-outs. Discussion of moveable walls was short- ala http://www.dirtt.net/ no direct experience in the room- suggested Hines project La Jolla Commons www.ljcommons.com for reference.
John had air-flow redundancy on the top of his mind. Wet labs, animals elevate risks in failure. Mike made some suggestions in using mechanical companies portable rental equipment to bridge gap, as opposed to building so much inventory of back up parts. Suggestions for IFMA Mechanical Services would be appreciated.
