2008 Wing Apartment Refurbishment
In March and April 2008 chapter members came together to rennovate a 600 SF one bedroom apartment belonging to our charity San Diego Youth and Community Services (SDYCS). Organized by our Community Services Chair Shari Joyce, we rennovated one of their "Take Wing Transitional Living" apartments that hadn't been touched in fifteen years. The "Take Wing" program and their apartments, located on Wing Street near the Sports Arena, focus on teaching homeless teens, teenage moms, young families, and those “aging out” of the foster care system to become independent and productive members of society. "Take Wing" provides affordable housing, Independent Living Skills training, and life planning. For more info about SDYCS and Take Wing, click on this link. Our volunteers removed and replaced the old flooring, ceiling lighting, the stove, bathroom vanity, kitchen hardware, baseboards and painted the interior. Some of the purchases donated were: microwave, coffee pot, interior plants, kitchen table & chairs, cleaning supplies, dishware and other household goods. For a gallery of photos of this project, click on this link. Shari stated that "This has been a truly rewarding experience and I just wanted to pass my gratitude on to the following companies and members that donated their time, resources, and talent". And Shari, we want to thank you for organizing this worthy project.
